The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level
I first discovered The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks several years again, when it was recommended by my coach at the time.
I’ve since listened to it a number of times on Audible. They say a man never crosses the same river twice. Indeed, each time I listen to it I find I take new things away from it. Things I either wasn’t ready to hear before or certainly, that didn’t resonate as they do now.
A couple of things I recall right from the first listen to include the concept of the Zone of Genius and the mantra “I’m dedicated to operating in my zone of genius now and forever.”
Contrary to what you may be thinking, The Big Leap is not about taking the leap from paid employment to something else, rather it’s about taking leaps in our mindset, and some of the things that can stand in our way.
The Big Leap summary
The Big Leap is a treasure trove of valuable insights on how to overcome the fears and tendencies that can stand in the way of lasting success. It demonstrates different ways we can self-sabotage our own dreams and offers practical ways of avoiding these all-too-common pitfalls.
Key elements of The Big Leap
4 key questions to ask yourself to see if you’re ready to take The Big Leap
- Am I willing to increase the amount of time each day that I feel good inside?
- Am I willing to increase the amount of time that my whole life goes well?
- Am I willing to feel good and have my life go well all of the time?
- Am I willing to take the Big Leap to my ultimate level of success in love, money, and creativity?
Upper Limit Problem – this is where we tend to self-sabotage ourselves to stop us from reaching an invisible barrier. Upper Limit Problems keep us small and prevent us from reaching of Zone of Genius.
Zone of Genius – where work doesn’t feel like work, time expands and flows to the amount we need.
One way of finding your Zone of Genius is by asking “What do I most love to do, so I can do it for long stretches of time without getting bored or tired?”
Memorable points in The Big Leap that resonated with me
Zone of Genius – v Zone of Excellence, where many of us live, Zone of Competence, and Zone of Incompetence. The Zone of Genius is the only place where we get to fully express the gifts we’ve been given.
The simple question “How am I getting in my own way?”
My evaluation of The Big Leap
This book can really be really helpful with mindset changes (leaps) and to help you wake up to your calling.
I owe so much to this book already and continue to do so each time I listen. I feel like Gay Hendricks has become a wise old friend of mine. He has a great voice to listen to in Audible.
I’ll continue to listen every now and again whenever I feel the need.
Having only ever listened, I sometimes wonder what it would be like to read a physical copy of the book. This often opens us up to different things again.
I hope you enjoy it and get as much from it as I have.
